Unsolaced Ground
DATE
2026
This project responds to the concept of solastalgia – the distress caused by the unwanted transformation of one’s home environment. It weaves together personal and family memory (my mother, my grandmother, and myself) with the changing landscape of the Shandong University Medical Campus (We call it "Shanyi山医"), where my grandmother worked and my mother grew up. Through three interconnected bodies of work – cyanotype on stone, a book sealed with wax, and a video of wind erasing a sand model – I explore how environmental change, even when slow and seemingly “natural,” is often driven by human decisions. The works are installed in the very place where my grandmother and mother first lived, turning the campus into both subject and exhibition space.
"Unsolaced Ground 故土无慰" echoes the root of “solastalgia”. The ground beneath us, once a source of comfort and identity, has become a site of quiet loss – standing on familiar land, yet feeling no solace.
