In this installation, the artist employs “toys, a medium carrying societal unconsciousness, to visually critique the social construction of gender.
The artist uses a seesaw—an object symbolizing dynamic equilibrium—to create a deliberately unbalanced state, metaphorically representing the solidification and distortion of power relations under traditional gender discipline. The toys stacked at both ends of the installation, marked with distinct gender codes and attached text labels, collectively point to the “hidden curriculum” that operates through the interplay of family, school, and society.
Instead of a physical cage, the artist envelops the entire space with the light and shadow of a projected birdcage. This invokes a classic metaphor from feminist theory about systemic oppression, transforming invisible social norms into a visible, structural “disciplinary field.” Silhouettes of children playing within the video reinforce the reality that individuals are incorporated into this power structure from an early age, prompting viewers to deeply reflect on the dialectical relationship between ‘nature’ and “nurture.”
